Street layer © Esri, HERE, Garmin, & OpenStreetMap contributors. Click a draw button above, trace the boundary on the map, then drag any point to adjust it, or import a boundary file from the panel on the right.

Disclaimer. This tool is free and for reference only, not a certified survey. Accuracy depends on how closely you trace the boundary and the basemap imagery, which may be outdated. Any decision you make from these numbers is your own responsibility — we accept no liability for it. How It Works

How to Measure Land Area on a Satellite Map

  1. Find your location. Search an address in the box above the map, or use "My Location" to center on where you are.
  2. Pick a drawing tool, or import a boundary. Use the Draw Area, Rectangle, Circle, or Line buttons above the map — or upload an existing KML, KMZ, Shapefile, or GeoJSON file from the Import Boundary panel to plot it automatically.
  3. Trace the boundary. If drawing, click each corner of the area you want to measure on the satellite imagery, then click the first point again (or double-click) to close the shape. The shape is immediately editable — drag any point to fix a corner without redrawing, or use Undo to remove the last point.
  4. Read the result. The area or distance appears instantly on the shape itself, in the Measurements panel, and in the full results table below the map, showing acres, hectares, m², km², sq ft, and sq mi all at once.
  5. Save, export, or request imagery. Save the shapes as a named project for later, download GeoJSON/KML/CSV, or send the measured area straight to our imagery sales team from the Request Professional Imagery panel.

Why a Satellite Map Measuring Tool

Measuring acreage, property measurements, or distance against a blank grid is guesswork — this land area calculator works directly against real satellite imagery instead, letting you draw over an actual building footprint, fence line, field edge, or parcel boundary. It works like the area and distance tools built into Google Maps and Google Earth, but free, with no account, and with boundary import, saved projects, and GeoJSON/KML/CSV export all built in.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate area using a satellite map?
Search your address or pan the satellite map to your location, then click the polygon, rectangle, or circle tool and click along the boundary you want to measure. The area updates live in acres, hectares, m², km², sq ft, and sq mi as soon as you close the shape — no login or download required.
How accurate is this satellite area calculator?
It uses geodesic (spherical-earth) area and distance math, the same core calculation used by professional GIS tools, so it's accurate for real-world land area and acreage measurement. Accuracy in practice depends on how precisely you trace the boundary and the zoom level of the satellite imagery you're tracing over.
Is this tool really free, with no signup or paywall?
Yes. Every feature on this page, drawing and measuring, boundary-file import, saved projects, and exports, is free with no account and no usage limit. We built it because we sell satellite imagery priced by area, and a precise area measurement is the first thing any imagery quote needs.
Can I measure acreage without visiting the site in person?
Yes — that's the main use case. Search any address or coordinate, switch to the satellite layer, and trace the parcel boundary visible in the imagery to get an acreage figure without a site visit or survey equipment.
What units does the area calculator support?
Area results are available in acres, hectares, square meters (m²), square kilometers (km²), square feet (sq ft), and square miles (sq mi) — the full results table below the map shows every shape in all six units at once. Distance measurements are available in meters, kilometers, feet, and miles.
What boundary file formats can I import?
KML, KMZ, zipped Shapefile (.shp/.dbf/.prj together in a .zip), and plain GeoJSON (.geojson or .json). KML/KMZ/Shapefile files are parsed securely on our server; GeoJSON is parsed directly in your browser — either way, the boundary is plotted and measured automatically.
Where are my saved projects stored?
In your own browser's local storage, not on our servers — nothing is uploaded unless you explicitly import a boundary file or submit the imagery request form. Clearing your browser data will remove saved projects.
Can I export the area I measured to Google Earth or GIS software?
Yes — use the Download KML button for Google Earth and most GIS software, Download GeoJSON for web maps and modern GIS tools (QGIS, Mapbox, Leaflet), or Download CSV for a spreadsheet summary of every shape's area, perimeter, and center coordinates.
Can I get real satellite imagery for the area I just measured?
Yes — use the "Request Professional Imagery" panel. It sends your name, email, the measured area, and an auto-generated KML of your exact boundary straight to our sales team, who reply by email with pricing based on your real area.
Does this tool work for both land size and distance measurement?
Yes. The polygon, rectangle, and circle tools measure area (acreage, hectares, square footage); the line tool measures straight-line distance in meters, kilometers, feet, or miles — useful for fence runs, access roads, or pipeline routes.
Is there a land area calculator like Google Maps or Google Earth?
Yes — this satellite area calculator works the same way as the measuring tools built into Google Maps or Google Earth, but as a free, standalone land area calculator: no Google account required, plus boundary import, saved projects, and GeoJSON/KML/CSV export that those built-in tools don't offer.
Can I use this as a free tool for property measurements on a map?
Yes — draw directly over a property boundary on the satellite map to get instant property measurements: acreage, square footage, hectares, and perimeter, completely free with no signup required.
Does this work as a sqft calculator, map area calculator, or satellite square footage calculator?
Yes, all three. Switch the unit dropdown to sq ft for a sqft calculator reading, use any drawing tool as a general map area calculator, or rely on the satellite basemap underneath for a true satellite square footage calculator reading of a building footprint or lot.
What's the fastest way to find area on a map?
Search your address, pick the polygon or rectangle tool, and trace the boundary — the fastest way to find area on a map without manual math. The figure updates the instant you close the shape, in whichever unit you've selected.
